Aromatherapy massage, in a well-planned setting with appropriate music and colors, allows the patron to enjoy the experience on multiple levels, through the all the senses, including touch, smell, hearing and sight. Aromatherapy uses natural essential oils, which are extracted from botanicals: herbs, flowers and plants. (Essential oils are not actually oils, although they have an oily feel and float on water. These are the same essential oils that are the basis of perfume manufacturing - and they can be combined in a multitude of ways, producing a variety of states from deep relaxation and peace of mind to high energy.

Aromatherapists over time have developed specific uses for different essential oils. In massage, essential oils are administered through inhalation and application to the skin, and are said to balance energy, moods and physiology. The focus is on the blending of herbal and floral essences to meet the specific needs and desires of the patron or to produce a desired effect. Essential oils, whether used individually or in blends, enhance well-being and beauty by restoring balance to the body, mind, and spirit. The pressure used in the massage is light to moderate and the effect is soothing. The usual contraindications apply in aromatherapy massage. Additionally, therapists should check for allergies or sensitivity to perfumes or other botanical products. Certain aromatherapy products are not recommended for use with pregnant women.
