Massage is very safe, and most people will not have any serious reactions to massage. However there are some health conditions which require a cautious approach.
Massage is not recommended for anyone with a fever, contagious condition, or recent injury or surgery. These conditions should be allowed to heal before receiving a massage.
Massage should not be given to anyone with a blood clot, and anyone with a history of blood clot or of phlebitis must consult his or her physician before receiving massage. Varicose veins are not usually a problem, unless they are inflamed (painful, swollen, red and hot.) If varicose veins are painful, please consult your physician before receiving a massage.
Massage should not be performed on anyone with congestive heart failure, kidney failure or liver failure without consulting the treating physician first. Generally massage should not be performed on anyone who has had a heart attack or heart surgery in the last year. Anyone who is receiving treatment for a serious illness such as cancer, AIDS or other serious illness should consult his or her physician before receiving a massage.
If you are not sure whether or not you should have a massage, please ask us before scheduling your massage, or consult your physician. A prescription is not necessary, but it is important that your physician knows you are planning to have a massage if you are being treated for any injury or disease.
